Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment

Published: September 23, 2026

Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment

Borderline personality disorder makes emotions feel more intense and relationships harder to navigate. Our program is built around DBT, the most evidence-based approach available, alongside care for any co-occurring substance use.

Borderline personality disorder is often misunderstood, and many people who live with it have been dismissed or judged before they ever found the right care. At Midtown Recovery Center, we start from a place of respect: BPD is a treatable condition, not a character flaw.

Our approach centers on Dialectical Behavior Therapy, the treatment with the strongest evidence base for BPD, which teaches real, practical skills for managing intense emotions, navigating relationships, and tolerating distress without turning to self-destructive behavior. Because BPD and substance use disorders so often occur together, we treat both at the same time, in the same program, rather than sending you elsewhere for one or the other.

You don’t have to keep white-knuckling through emotional intensity that feels unmanageable. With the right skills and support, it becomes possible to feel steadier — in your emotions, your relationships, and your sense of self.

Signs You May Need Treatment

  • Intense mood swings that shift quickly and feel hard to control
  • A pattern of unstable, intense relationships
  • Fear of real or imagined abandonment
  • Impulsive behavior, including substance use, that feels hard to stop in the moment
  • Chronic feelings of emptiness or an unstable sense of self

Our Approach to Treatment

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is the most evidence-based treatment for BPD, teaching concrete skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Individual Therapy

One-on-one sessions give you space to work through the specific patterns and relationships driving distress, alongside your DBT skills work.

Co-Occurring Substance Use Treatment

BPD and substance use disorders frequently occur together. We treat both simultaneously rather than requiring one to be resolved before addressing the other.

Crisis & Safety Planning

You’ll leave treatment with a concrete plan for navigating intense emotions and crisis moments safely, built together with your clinical team.
