Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
Published: September 23, 2026
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold-standard treatment for OCD, gradually and safely helping you face feared thoughts or situations without giving in to compulsions.
Exposure and Response Prevention is considered the gold-standard treatment for OCD, and for good reason: it directly addresses the cycle that keeps OCD in place. Obsessive thoughts create anxiety, compulsions temporarily relieve it, and the cycle repeats, reinforcing itself each time.
At Midtown Recovery Center, ERP is offered as part of PHP and IOP treatment for clients navigating OCD or related anxiety conditions. Your clinician works with you to gradually and safely face feared thoughts or situations, while building the skills to resist the compulsive response that’s kept the cycle going. This is done collaboratively and at a pace that feels manageable, never by throwing you into your biggest fear on day one.
ERP asks a lot of courage, and we don’t take that lightly. Our clinicians are trained to guide the process carefully, so the work feels challenging but never overwhelming.
Signs You May Need Treatment
- Intrusive, unwanted thoughts that cause significant distress
- Compulsive behaviors or rituals performed to reduce anxiety
- Avoiding people, places, or situations because of obsessive fears
- Time-consuming rituals that interfere with daily life
- Previous therapy that didn’t directly address compulsive behavior
Our Approach to Treatment
Gradual, Structured Exposure
You and your therapist build a step-by-step plan for facing feared thoughts or situations at a pace that feels manageable, never all at once.
Response Prevention
You’ll practice resisting compulsive responses in a supported setting, which is where the real, lasting change happens.
Collaborative Pacing
ERP only works when it feels safe. Your clinician works closely with you to set the pace, never pushing faster than you’re ready for.
Skill Generalization
The goal is progress that holds up outside of session — in your actual daily life, not just in the therapy room.
We Accept Most Major Insurance Plans
Don't let cost be a barrier to recovery. Most treatment is covered by insurance.
